Why Different Denture Impression Techniques Matter – Every Mouth Is Different

When it comes to making comfortable, well-fitting dentures, one of the most important stages happens before the new teeth are even made: taking an accurate impression of your mouth.

At Delux Denture Clinic Yagoona, we understand that no two mouths are exactly the same. Different patients have different gum shapes, bone levels, muscle movements and oral anatomy. This is why there isn't one single denture impression technique that is ideal for every patient.

Choosing the right impression technique can make a significant difference to the fit, comfort and stability of your new dentures.

Why Are Denture Impressions So Important?

A denture impression creates a detailed reproduction of the tissues that will support your denture.

For full dentures, this is particularly important because there are no natural teeth available to help hold the denture in position. The denture relies on the shape of the gums, underlying bone and surrounding muscles for support and stability.

Some patients have broad, firm ridges that provide excellent support. Others may have experienced significant bone and gum shrinkage after wearing dentures for many years.

Because the anatomy is different, the impression technique may need to be different too.

Preliminary and Final Impressions

For many new full denture cases, treatment begins with a preliminary impression. This gives us an overall reproduction of the mouth and allows a customised impression tray to be created specifically for the patient.

A more detailed final denture impression can then be taken using the custom tray.

This allows greater control over how the impression material records the gums and surrounding tissues compared with simply relying on a standard-sized impression tray.

Border Moulding for Full Dentures

For certain patients, border moulding can be an important part of the full denture impression process.

The borders of a denture interact with moving structures including the lips, cheeks and tongue. During border moulding, these movements can be used to help determine the appropriate shape and extension of the denture borders.

This can be especially valuable when making complete upper and lower dentures, where correctly extending the denture without interfering with normal muscle movement can contribute to better comfort and stability.

What About Patients With Flat or Resorbed Gums?

Patients who have worn dentures for many years can sometimes develop flat or severely resorbed ridges as the underlying bone gradually changes.

These mouths may require a different approach.

Applying excessive pressure during an impression can distort movable tissues. In certain cases, a more controlled or selective-pressure impression technique may be used to record the supporting tissues appropriately.

The goal is not simply to take the “tightest” impression possible. It is to accurately understand the patient's anatomy and create a denture that works with the mouth.

Flabby or Mobile Gum Tissue

Some patients have areas of soft, mobile or “flabby” gum tissue, particularly in the upper jaw.

If this tissue is heavily compressed while taking an impression, it may rebound once the impression is removed. This can affect how the finished denture sits when the mouth is at rest.

Depending on the individual case, an impression technique designed to minimise unnecessary displacement of these tissues may be more appropriate.

Lower Dentures Can Require Special Attention

Lower dentures can be particularly challenging because there is generally less surface area available for support, while the tongue, cheeks and floor of the mouth are constantly moving.

For some patients, recording these functional movements carefully can help determine where the denture borders should sit.

This is one reason why two people receiving a new lower denture may require different clinical techniques even though they are receiving the same type of denture.

There Is No “One Size Fits All” Denture Impression

A good denture starts with understanding the individual mouth.

The best impression technique depends on factors such as gum and bone anatomy, ridge resorption, mobile tissues, saliva, muscle movement, existing dentures and the type of denture being made.

At Delux Denture Clinic Yagoona, each patient is assessed individually so the impression technique and treatment process can be selected according to their particular oral anatomy.
